Tax Planning for Denver Individuals & Small Businesses

Strategy starts with your goals, not paperwork

Tax strategy is not about filling in more forms. It is about your real goals. Maybe you want to buy a home, grow your business, sell a property strategically, or retire without worry. We build a plan around where you want to go, not just what already happened last year. Then we line up the tax moves that support it.

Why planning beats reacting

Most people think about taxes only in the spring. By then, the year is over and your options are gone. Good tax planning works the other way. It looks ahead, so you can act while choices are still open.

When you plan, you get to steer. You can time income and deductions on purpose. You can fund the right accounts before the deadline. You can avoid surprises that lead to a big bill you did not see coming. Planning turns tax season from a scramble into a routine.

Don Morrow has guided clients this way since 1974. That is more than 50 years of watching the tax code change. We use that experience to help you keep more of what you earn, within the rules.

Two ways we help: strategy and planning

We separate these on purpose, because they are two different things.

Tax strategy is included with every return, at no extra charge. As we prepare your taxes, we do not just fill in the forms. We look for moves that could help you next year, like a missed retirement option or a better way to handle a side business. That strategic eye comes with the return. It is a big part of why our clients stay.

Tax planning sessions are a separate, deeper service you can book. When a bigger question comes up, like a sale, a new venture, or a major life change, we set aside dedicated time to study your full picture and map out a clear plan. This is a paid service, and many clients find that a single session pays for itself.

What we help you plan

Every situation is different, so we tailor the plan to you. Here are common topics we cover:

  • Timing income and deductions. We decide when to recognize income or claim a deduction to lower your total tax.

  • Retirement contributions. We look at IRA, SEP, and solo 401(k) options to grow savings and cut taxable income.

  • Business structure. We review whether your setup as a sole proprietor, LLC, or S corporation still fits your goals.

  • Quarterly estimated taxes. We help you pay the right amount on time, so you avoid penalties and cash crunches.

  • Real estate and rentals. We plan around depreciation, sales, and the timing of property moves.

  • Life changes. Marriage, a new child, a home purchase, retirement, or an inheritance can all shift your taxes. We plan for each one.

Who benefits most

Anyone can gain from planning, but some people gain the most. If your income changes from year to year, planning smooths the ride. If you own a business or rental property, the choices are bigger and the stakes are higher.

People near a big life event also benefit. A new baby, a home sale, or a coming retirement all deserve a plan. If you earn 1099 income as a consultant, planning helps you manage taxes you owe yourself. The more moving parts you have, the more a plan is worth.

What a planning session looks like

A session is simple and relaxed. You share your goals and recent numbers through SmartVault, our secure client portal. We review your income, deductions, and any changes on the horizon.

Then we sit down together, in person or by phone. We walk through your options in plain language. You will not hear jargon or feel rushed. You leave with clear steps you can take and a sense of what your taxes will look like. If questions come up later, you know where to find us.
