Small Business Tax Services in the Denver Metro
A Denver small business CPA and EA who knows your numbers
Running a business is hard enough. Your taxes should not add to the stress. We prepare and file returns for small businesses across the Denver metro. The firm is just two partners, Don and Steph. Don Morrow, CPA, has led it since 1974, so you get real experience and you work with an owner every time, not a junior preparer. Steph Tripp is a partner who has built and owned businesses and invested in real estate herself, so she understands the decisions you face.
We serve the entire Denver metro area and file remotely in all 50 states. Whatever your business type, we help you file it right and plan for what comes next.
Who this is for
We help owners and operators who wear a lot of hats. If any of these sound like you, we can help.
Sole proprietors and single-member LLCs
S-corporation owners who take a salary and distributions
Partnerships and multi-member LLCs
Freelancers, consultants, and 1099 contractors
Owners with income or work in more than one state
Sole proprietors and single-member LLCs
If you run a business by yourself, you likely file a Schedule C. This form goes right on your personal 1040. It reports your income and your business expenses. A single-member LLC usually files the same way.
Here is the part many owners miss: your profit is subject to self-employment tax. That covers Social Security and Medicare, and it adds up fast. We make sure you claim every expense you can, so you are not overpaying income taxes or self-employment taxes.
We help you sort your income and expenses into the right categories
We provide guidance on how to properly track mileage, home office, and equipment costs
We calculate your self-employment tax the right way
We help you uncover additional expenses you might have missed or did not realize you could deduct
S-corporation tax preparation
An S-corp can lower how much self-employment tax you pay. That is why many growing businesses choose it. But it comes with more moving parts, and the filing must be done with care.
Your S-corp files its own return on Form 1120-S. That business return then produces a Schedule K-1 for each owner. The K-1 reports your share of the profit and basis in the company, which flows onto your personal 1040. We handle both the business return and your personal return, so the numbers match and nothing slips through.
Good S-corp tax preparation is about timing and coordination. We look at your salary versus your distributions and keep the two returns in step. If you are thinking about electing S-corp status, we can walk you through what changes, advise whether it makes sense for your business, and help you set it up.
We prepare Form 1120-S for your business
We issue clean K-1s to each owner
We coordinate the business and personal returns together
We help identify every expense and write-off your business can claim
Partnerships and multi-member LLCs
When two or more people own a business together, it often files as a partnership. A multi-member LLC usually files the same way. The business return here is Form 1065.
The partnership itself does not pay income tax. Instead, it passes profit and loss to the partners. Each partner gets a Schedule K-1 that shows their share. Those numbers then go on each partner's personal return.
We keep this process clear for everyone at the table. We prepare Form 1065, split the results the way your agreement says, and get accurate K-1s to each partner on time.
Self-employed and 1099 professionals
Freelancers, consultants, and contractors have a different tax life than employees. No one withholds taxes from your pay. That means you are in charge of setting money aside and filing correctly.
We help self-employed people keep clean records and claim the right deductions. We also help you plan so a big tax bill does not catch you off guard. Whether you drive for work, run a home studio, or bill by the hour, we know how to file self-employed tax the smart way.
We review your 1099s and match them to your records
We find deductions that fit your line of work
We help you plan for what you owe before it is due, including how to calculate and pay quarterly state and federal taxes
Quarterly estimated taxes
Most business owners pay taxes four times a year. These are called quarterly estimated taxes. The IRS wants tax as you earn, not just at year end.
If you skip these payments or pay too little, you can face interest and penalties. That is a cost you can avoid with a simple plan. We figure out what you should pay each quarter, remind you when it is due, and guide you on how to make the payments. You stay on track and keep more of your cash working in your business.
We calculate each quarter based on your real income
We help you avoid underpayment penalties
We advise you on how to adjust your amounts if your year speeds up or slows down
From bookkeeping to filing, all year
Clean books make tax time easy. Messy books make it stressful. We help you close the gap between your day-to-day records and your final return.
When your books are ready, the handoff to filing should be smooth. We use SmartVault, our secure client portal, so you can share documents safely from anywhere. As an authorized IRS e-file provider, we file your return the modern way.
There is real value in working with the same two partners year after year. We learn your business, remember your history, and spot changes early. You never have to explain your story from scratch. That trust is why small business clients stay with us for the long run.
Built for Denver metro businesses
We are proud to serve owners across the Denver metro, close to home and far away. Wherever your business is based in the area, we are easy to reach and easy to work with.
Local professionals and small shops make up the heart of our work. We know the Denver metro and the pace of business here. And if you have grown across state lines, we prepare multi-state returns too.
Plan ahead, not just at tax time
Filing looks back at the year that ended. Planning looks ahead at the year to come. We also offer year-round tax planning, a separate service, so you can make smart moves before the deadline, not after. Ask us how a plan can lower your bill and remove surprises. You can learn more on our planning page.
